WHAT IS SO MENACING ABOUT FIBER?

You probably believe fiber prevents colon and breast cancer, lowers cholesterol, reduces the risk of heart disease, regulates blood sugar, wards off diabetes, curbs the appetite, induces weight loss, cleanses the colon, arrests diarrhea, and unplugs constipation. Tragically, none of this is true!

In fact, fiber-rich foods and fiber supplements are either the primary cause of most of these conditions, or major contributors.

High Fiber Foods - Healthy Weight Loss

October 13th, 2008 -- Posted in Diet for Diverticulosis | 14 Comments »

Naturopathic Doctors strongly suggest that we increase roughage (fiber) in our diets. The latest holistic medical research suggests the high incidence of heart disease, diabetes, bowel disease, hernia and diverticulitis in western countries on a lack of dietary fiber in the diet.

How much dietary fiber are you consuming on a daily basis?

Americans usually avoid high fiber diets because of a concern that it will increase gas levels and bloating. As a matter of fact eating fiber will help the normal detoxification processes, normalize your bowel and support maintenance of a healthy weight and prevent bowel diseases.

Dietary fiber amounts are now listed on most product labels in supermarkets.
It is suggested that we consume at least 35 grams of dietary fiber daily.
This amount can assist in re-establishing proper digestion in your body by toning and strengthening your bowel, eliminating harmful toxins. High Fiber Foods in Your Diet represent the revolutionary way for you to lose weight, prevent disease, stay slim and have
more energy. Dietary fiber and digestive enzymes are a great way to improve poor digestion.

Advice re diet for diverticulosis?

October 7th, 2008 -- Posted in Diet for Diverticulosis | 2 Comments »

My health professional suspects I might have diverticulosos and told me to eat mushy foods until the diagnosis is confirmed or excluded - you know, mashed spuds, cooked greens. No meat, low fats (so no cheeses) that sort of deal.

Does anybody with diverticulosis have any dietary advice for me?

I don't have diverticulosis, however, I do have a nutrition background.

Current recommendations is for those with diverticulosis to eat a diet high in fibre so that stools are soft and easier to pass. I am not entirely sure why the doctor recommended soft foods…maybe he was referring to avoidance of things with seeds, pips and husks as these can get stuck in the outpocketing associated with diverticulosis and lead to infection.

You can still follow your doctors recommendation of soft foods and get a high fibre diet by eating high fibre foods pureed. High fibre foods include beans, vegetables (avoid large seeds), fruits (particulary pears, apples and bananas). To top up your fibre intake think about psyllium husk supplements.

Suggestions include mashing beans (baked beans), mashed potato, vegetable soups,

Word of warning - high fibre diets can cause gas and bloating. I suggest building your fibre intake up slowly and be assured that you will get used to it.

If you do have diverticulosis then I recommend you see a dietitian either during your treatment in hospital (request a visit as medical staff do not always call for referals) or a private practice dietitian. They can help you maintain a diet that will have the best results for your condition.

Do you have diverticulosis? What is your diet? Does it work?

October 7th, 2008 -- Posted in Diet for Diverticulosis | 2 Comments »

I'm not sure if I have Diverticulosis or if the Radiologist just burnt up my insides while radiating me 41 times.

I can not control my bowels, most of the time. I wear diapers for protection, but sometimes that won't contain everything. Once at WalMart and once in Sam's, I felt like a fool. Lucklily, I was able to use the handicap stall to clean up.

Have you ever had this problem?

I would go to a gastroenterologist ASAP. Could be signs of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), like Crohns Disease or Ulcerative Colitis. I have Crohns Disease, not pretty, sounds similar to what you can often go through. Please see someone. Hope you get better!

Konsyl Psyllium Fiber for Digestive Health

October 7th, 2008 -- Posted in Diet for Diverticulosis | No Comments »

Psyllium fiber can help people with IBS, diverticulosis, high cholesterol, constipation, hemorrhoids and irregularity. Konsyl fiber is going to be a little different if you’ve ever tried those other fiber supplements out there. It has the highest concentration of dietary fiber per dose. You’ll probably only need to take one teaspoon of Konsyl Original mixed with a cup of juice, just once a day. You’d have to choke down those other orange-flavor concoctions twice a day to get as much fiber as you’re getting here.
Plus Konsyl Original has no added flavors — it has no real taste — so you can mix it with your favorite juice, or make up a different drink every morning. Orange juice, cranapple, crystal light, V8, whatever you like! More info at www.konsyl.com
